FRMCS based on 5G

Next-generation mobile communication system for digital railway operations

  • Konferenzgebäude, Str. der Freundschaft 11, 09456 Annaberg-Buchholz

Beschreibung

Future rail operations will introduce modern technologies for enabling automation and digitization for improved railway performance. The increased grade of automation comes with new use cases and demanding data communication needs. Besides the transmission of voice and train control data, there will be emerging train-to-ground services such as the transfer of mission-critical video and sensor information in real-time. Consequently, railway communications will need to deal with increased data rates and stricter requirements on application reliability and latency. The next generation mobile communication technology 5G will be the basis for a powerful and flexible Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). It will initially complement and eventually replace the currently running 2G based GSM-R system, which cannot meet the connectivity requirements of digital rail operations. A major milestone for FRMCS was recently reached through the legal anchoring of FRMCS in the Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI) 2023. However, the first set of complete FRMCS specifications is yet to be completed and expected to be finalized in mid 2024, followed by a complete validation of the specification. So far, first pre-standard FRMCS calls and feature tests have been conducted in different early technology trials and prototype validation projects. Several of these 5G/FRMCS trial projects make use of the digital rail testbed infrastructure in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), Germany, such as the European cooperation project 5GRAIL and the Franco-German project 5G-RACOM. This workshop session will enable infrastructure managers, railway telecommunication vendors and application service providers as well as participants from academia and research to present the latest work and results in context of 5G-based FRMCS. The session shall serve as a forum to discuss current trends and developments with regards to standardization, implementation and validation of FRMCS.The workstream session shall take place in the morning for up to 3 hours, including a 30 min coffee and networking break. The organizers envision a room which allows for a format of presentations and expert talks. We will invite approx. 5-7 speakers, including (but not limited to) members of 5GRAIL and 5G-RACOM. Key words: FRMCS, 5G, Railway Communication, Mission Critical Services (MCx), Digital Rai
